How was Omotesandō Plants born?
Feb 16, 2022
Omotesandō Plants was born out of a combination of a love for plants, a desire to start a new project and a trip to Japan.
I'm Joan, I'm from Sant Cugat del Vallès(Barcelona), and in 2018 I founded the company Omotesandō Plants. I never thought I would end up dedicating my life to plants and, in fact, I studied Political Science at university. With time (and many jobs and internships related to political science), I realized that being a political scientist was not my thing.
As life would have it, I ended up working as a customer service representative in a flower delivery company in Barcelona. It's not that I was particularly interested in flowers, I just needed a job and I applied to all the job offers I found in the job portals. Working there I realized that if I had a company, I would do things in a very different way, so I got motivated and started a Master in Business. That was the push I needed to see that I wanted to create something on my own, I wanted to open a flower business. But of course, there were already many of those, especially in Barcelona.
That same summer I went on a trip to Japan with my family. Walking through the neighborhood of Nakameguro, in Tokyo, I went into a small plant store, and that's where I discovered (and fell in love with) kokedamas.
When I returned to Barcelona, I got down to work and, after reading and researching about this wonderful centuries-old technique, I made my first kokedama... And it looked terrible, but that's how I gradually began to perfect my technique and to think about a brand. Finally I decided to found Omotesandō Plants, whose name refers to another neighborhood in the city of Tokyo.
At first we produced only kokedamas, but over time we started researching with other products and so we created gardens in a bowl and preserved roses. We even created Ginza Flowersa brand within Omotesandō Plants, where we work with multicolored dried flower bouquets.
Just as our products grew, so did the company and the team, so we went from working in small premises with very little light, to having our own premises in the Mercantic site in Sant Cugat.
Our stop at the'Palo Alto Market Fest' market on the day we opened Omotesandō in November 2018.
The result of the work of the whole team is a small, family business with very determined values, as we place great importance on the fact that each product is handcrafted and unique.
