The Aspa kokedama
Imagine you are walking through a forest. To the right, you have a spring of crystal-clear water where butterflies flutter about. To the left, you see how the sun's rays enter through the foliage of the trees, creating a rainbow. Which plant do you imagine growing in this fairy tale?
Undoubtedly a kokedama asparagus! But we don't mean the plant that gives asparagus, we mean the one that looks like a fern, silky to the touch and feathery appearance (hence its name Asparagus Plumosus). Aspa, as we call it at Omotesandō Plants, has very slender stems that can grow very tall. In fact, in floristry it is widely used in bouquets as a filler plant because of its great ornamental value.
How do I take care of my kokedama asparagus?
The asparagus plant, also called Asparagus, can grow both indoors and outdoors, but we recommend placing your Aspa kokedama always indoors, as it is quite sensitive to cold (the temperature should not drop below 10ºC).
It needs to grow in a bright place but protected from direct sunlight. If the plant does not receive sunlight, it is possible that it will grow too much, as it will elongate looking for the sun, and this could not only give it a strange shape but also make it lose its density and size. On the other hand, if the plant receives direct sunlight, it will lose its green color and its stems will turn yellow.
As for watering, it is important to keep the kokedama moist, as the Aspa likes to receive water constantly. However, that doesn't mean it can't withstand drought - it can, but it will grow much more slowly.
Like any other plant, it is crucial to clean it up and prune it of dry or damaged branches, or even overgrown ones. The good thing is that you don't have to wait for a certain season to prune it, you can do it all year round! You simply need to cut the dry, yellowed, burned or peeled stems, which are often damaged by lack of humidity or light.
Curiosities about the Aspa
It's not just its appearance that is special - the Aspa plant is a box of surprises!
- In summer, Asparagus Plumosus blooms in the form of white flowers that eventually give way to small black or dark green berries. Beware, they are very toxic!
- It is not that its leaves are very thin and elongated... It has no leaves! Instead, Aspa has dark and light green branches and stems.
- Despite being a great plant, it has some enemies, such as spider mite, cottony mealybug or aphid. You can't get everyone to like you!
