The kokedama

At Omotesandō we work with plants in the kokedama style. Literally, 'Kokedama means moss ball and is a variant of the bonsai that began to be made about 500 years ago in Japan. The moss ball acts as a substitute for the traditional pot.

At Omotesandō we have been inspired by this Japanese technique and the idea behind it to bring a piece of nature inside your home.

Decoration and placement of the kokedama

Decoration

The beauty of the kokedama makes it look good everywhere. You can put it on top of a base that can be made of wood, slate, ceramic or other materials. You can even use plates. The kokedama adapts to all environments and styles. And if you want to give a touch of different decoration, you can hang it. The floating kokedama gardens are famous.

Placement

It is recommended to place the kokedama in a place with light but protected from direct sunlight. It is also preferable that it is away from drafts and direct heating. Most kokedama are indoor plants, but if it is an outdoor plant, it is also recommended to place it away from direct sunlight and away from from hot and cold air currents.

How to water kokedama

Kokedama is watered by immersion. The frequency of watering depends on the season of the year. In general:

  • Spring / Summer: 2 or 3 times a week, when you see that the moss is already dry.
  • Autumn / Winter: 1 or 2 times every ten days, also when you see that the moss is already dry.

Steps to follow when watering:

  1. Submerge the moss ball in a bowl of water until it is completely covered.
  2. Wait for bubbles to come out from inside the moss.
  3. Take it out and let it drain until it does not drip anymore. more.
  4. Now you can put your kokedama back in the place where you have chosen!

How to take care of plants

Here are some tips on how to take care of your plants!

1. Not too little, not too much. Plants need to be watered, but not too much. Plants tolerate a lack of water better than too much. Anyway, taking care of a plant is not a difficult task.

2. The vast majority of plants need to be watered once a week. Cacti and succulents are an exception. They need to be watered every two to three weeks.

3. Do you want to know if it is time to water your plant? Put your finger 2 centimeters into the mineral substrate. If the substrate is dry, it is time to water. Almost all plants prefer a slightly moist substrate.

4. When watering your plant, the amount of water you have to put in should be about one third of the capacity of the pot. The water should be at room temperature.

5. Normally, plants need to be placed in a place where they get indirect light. However, some plants do better in other locations.

6. Do a little research on your plant on the internet and see what its specific needs are.
