Frequently Asked Questions
ABOUT KOKEDAMAS, GARDENS IN A BOWL AND PRESERVED ROSES
What is a kokedama?
The word kokedama means "moss ball" and refers to a centuries-old technique originating in Japan that consists of planting a plant in a natural pot made of moss. This way of creating handmade plants was born more than 500 years ago in Japan thanks to people's desire to take a little piece of nature home with them, but today it is still a very popular technique!
From their appearance, it might seem that a kokedama is a delicate plant that requires a lot of maintenance and attention, but they are actually very easy to care for. At Omotesandō Plants we have kokedamas of all types, if you are having trouble deciding which kokedama to buy, feel free to contact us for advice.
How do I water my kokedama?
Watering a kokedama is easy and fun. It is watered by immersion. The steps to follow are:
How often do I have to water my kokedama?
The frequency depends on the type of plant and the season of the year.
-
Group 1: Ficus Ginseng, Pachira, other green plants and, in general, most kokedamas: Water every five days in summer and once a week in winter.
-
Group 2: Cacti and Succulents: Water once every ten days in summer and every two weeks in winter.
In general, the frequency of watering is the same frequency that the plant would need if it were in a pot.
Tip: If in addition to watering the plant, you keep the moss moist with a spray of water, it will be better off.
What is a garden in a bowl or terrarium?
Omotesandō Plants' Gardens in a Bowl are like having a small garden indoors. Also called gardens in a bottle, these plant compositions are like eternal gardens, small natural ecosystems inside which create a perfect microclimate for plants to develop and grow with minimal care. You only have to water them once a year!
In Omotesandō Plants we elaborate the Gardens in a bowl in an artisanal way and we have them in all sizes and shapes. In addition, the glass containers, both bowls and domes, are hand blown, making them the unique and elegant element to decorate any room. If you want to surprise someone with an original gift, do not hesitate to give an eternal garden.
How do I water my garden in a bowl?
Gardens in a bowl or terrariums are watered differently compared to kokedamas. These enclosed gardens are self-contained and require less water. In fact, they only need water once a year. The closed ecosystem inside the terrarium allows water to cycle inside, creating a self-sustaining balance. To water them, spray water inside the terrarium (next to the plants or on the side), but be sure not to overdo it, as excess water can damage the plants and the balance of the terrarium. The amount of water to add will depend on the size of the bowl.
How often do I have to water my garden in a bowl?
The frequency is once a year, although we must be very attentive to the humidity and condensation inside the bowl. If after 10 months there is no more condensation, it is time to water our terrarium. If, on the contrary, a year has passed and there is still condensation and humidity inside the bowl, it is still not necessary to water it.
Where do I place my kokedama or bowl garden?
Proper placement is essential to the well-being of your plants. Most plants require light, but not direct sunlight. Here are some guidelines:
Indirect light: Place your kokedama or garden in a location where it receives indirect light. Avoid direct sun: Make sure your plants are not exposed to direct sun for long periods, as this can damage them. Rotate: If possible, rotate your plants occasionally so that all parts of the plant receive even light.
What is a preserved rose?
Preserved roses or everlasting roses have gone through a process whereby their sap and water have been replaced with preservative liquid. This biodegradable mixture composed of a 100% plant-based formula allows the flowers to remain intact for years without the need for watering. The only thing to keep in mind is that they should be kept away from direct sunlight.
The roses, which can be red, yellow, pink or white (among other colors), are accompanied by preserved moss and can come in glass, wood or handmade ceramic containers.
What care do preserved roses need?
Preserved roses need minimal care. The most important thing, in fact, is not to water them. In addition to this, they should be placed in a place where they do not get direct sunlight. Therefore, like kokedamas and gardens in a bowl, they need indirect light.
